Shoot for the moon and beyond with this stunning glow-in-the-dark guide to our solar system! Space-loving kids aged 8-12 will expand their astronomy, physics and chemistry knowledge with each fully-illustrated, detailed page about planets, stars, telescopes, space travel and more. Like the celebrated Barefoot Books World Atlas, the pull-out poster of the solar system and lift-the-flap elements in Barefoot Books Solar System reinforce STEM knowledge and encourage future astronauts and engineers to interact with the text again and again. With astronomer-approved text and engaging, informative illustrations, Barefoot Books Solar System will ignite imaginations and enhance children’s understanding of the vast universe. Will become a mainstay for classrooms, libraries and gift-giving.
LR: The rare case of a buy-in that becomes a Big Book on our list--like finding a needle in a haystack! Bought from French publisher and translated the text, then hired an astronomer and STEM educator, Dr Carie Cardamone, who has been a longtime fan of Barefoot Books, to completely review and edit the text. Dr Cardamone has a PhD in Astronomy, teaches at Tufts University, and also designs and teaches STEM activities for children at the Museum of Science in Boston. Dr Carie brought the text up to date by fact-checking so we can truly say it contains the most accurate contemporary facts about the solar system, and she helped us make the book more globally focused--for example, when explaining the names of the planets (which are named after Greco-Roman gods), she also added the planet names from contemporary Asian and ancient Latin American cultures. She also used her expertise to make sure the text aligns with core educational concepts in our target age range, 8-12. And of course we’re also getting invaluable help from our very own MIT-trained astrophysicist-turned-Assistant Editor Nivair Gabriel!
We’ve also juiced this edition up a LOT--we’re adding lift-the-flap booklets and fold-out pages to match Atlas, a 3-page glossary of terms, an entire extra spread of information about space exploration (which Dr Carie wrote for us), and a pull-out poster, which we are creating in-house.
All of the text is glow-in-the-dark, so the book pairs perfectly with a flashlight for late-night stargazing!
